Cesium is a rare, highly reactive, soft metallic element of the alkali metal group. Its Periodic Table symbol is Cs and its atomic number is 55. It derives from the Latin word caesium, neuter of caesius, meaning bluish-grey. Cesium has characteristic lines in the blue part of the spectrum.
