Olan Ventura

In his latest series of paintings, Olan Ventura, a Filipino artist, starts by carefully replicating still life settings in the tradition of 17th century Dutch artists. He then proceeds to create colourful abstractions of drips and lines extending from elements within the composition. In many ways these abstractions resemble mistakes that you might find when an inkjet printer experiences a glitch and a ‘pull’ occurs. The result is an unexpected mash-up of traditional craft and modern technology. Ventura draws our attention to the painting’s lush palette by morphing the organic forms into graphic simplifications of the very same colours.
