Buff refers to something brownish-yellow or tan in colour. It comes from the Latin bubalus and later bufalus, both words for a wild ox. This is the origin of today's word buffalo. Buff became a term used to describe the tanned ox leather that was used as part of military uniforms dating back to the sixteenth century.
