Fuchsia takes its name from the fuchsia plant after the 16th century German botanist Leonhard Fuchs. Fuchsia, as a colour, became popular in 1859 after a new aniline dye called fuchsine was patented by a French chemist. Fuchsine's vivid purplish-red colour was used primarily to dye textiles.
