If you’ve been following the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, you’ve witnessed some very exciting soccer. Have you noticed that the goalkeepers wear a different uniform from their teammates? Well, it’s not by chance – it’s a rule. In the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) Official Laws of the Game, Law #4 states: “Each goalkeeper must wear colours that are distinguishable from the other players and the match officials.” Referees need to identify goalkeepers quickly, as they are the only players on the pitch allowed to touch the ball. Typically the marketing department or a team sponsor determine the uniform a keeper wears. Bright colours are popular, but they are not entirely chosen for visibility reasons. Research suggests that it can be harder for players to score on goalies that wear vivid colours – especially red.
